Four oxindolyl-based monoradicals (OxRs) with different substituents were synthesized and characterized. These OxRs can associate and dissociate reversibly in response to soft external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, and solvent polarity. Notably, the bond dissociation energies of OxR dimers can be finely tuned by the captodative effect between the radical sites and the attached substituents.
