This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the primary drivers of the green transition by distinguishing between the transformation of the main CO2 emission sources, namely, endogenous factors such as traditional energy sources (e.g. fossil fuels) and exogenous factors such as geopolitical influences. We propose a multifaceted examination of the role of institutions in the green transition from global, regional, and national perspectives. Our findings highlight the crucial role of institutions at every level in achieving a successful green transition. By retracing the papers published in the Special Issue ‘Energy and the Just Transition’ and adding new findings on labour markets, social imbalances, governance quality, and policy frameworks, we contribute to the scare literature on just transition. We also examine the structure of social capital and government venture capital initiatives that support a fair transition.
