Carbodicarbenes activate N2O in a NHC/N2 ligand exchange reaction to give stable diazoalkenes and a urea byproduct. By applying the NHC/N2 exchange, new classes of benzimidazole- and benzothiazole-diazoalkenes are reported. Combining two-fold ligand exchange reactions at C(0) a versatile route to carbodicarbenes and cumulenes is opened up.
