Alzheimer's Association launches new journal on the impacts of behavioral, social, and economic factors on health and dementia care in aging
Alzheimer's & Dementia ( IF 13.0 ) Pub Date : 2024-09-06 , DOI: 10.1002/alz.14240

The Alzheimer's Association® announces the launch of its newest open-access, peer-reviewed journal, Alzheimer's & Dementia®: Behavior & Socioeconomics of Aging (A&D: BSEA), the fourth in the Alzheimer's & Dementia family of journals®. The new journal examines how economic, social, and behavioral factors impact and inform health policy, interventions, and strategies of dementia care and health outcomes in aging.

A call for initial submissions was announced at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference® (AAIC®) 2024 in July. The first issue will debut in fall 2024. The new journal will provide a forum for contributions that:
  • Examine and prioritize the connections among behavioral, economic, social, and other determinants of health; aging; and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias.
  • Aid in the design, development, and implementation of evidence-based guidelines, best practices, strategies, interventions, therapeutics, and public policy to ultimately reduce and eliminate disparities, and facilitate and create equity, in aging and dementia.
Key topics of the journal will include:
  • Health economics.
  • Formal and informal caregiving.
  • Health-care practices and consequences.
  • Public health.
  • Bioethics and legal decision making in treatment, drug development, and regulatory practices.
  • Conduct of research, including diverse and inclusive participation.
  • Mental health in aging.
  • Behavioral economics.

The journal's editor-in-chief is Crystal M. Glover, PhD. Glover is an applied social psychologist and mixed methodologist at the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago, and an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and of neurological sciences at Rush Medical College. She leads the Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core at the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

“In today's complex and evolving environment, the impact of behavioral, social, and economic influences—separately and in combination—must be taken into consideration when creating and implementing policies that affect health and disease in aging,” Glover said.

“We plan to showcase exciting new research findings, and thoughtful and informed perspectives, on complex, nuanced, and often sensitive topics in aging and dementia. The goal: to impact and inform behavioral strategies and interventions, guidelines, health policy, economic models, and legal practices that promote optimal, equitable aging and dementia care,” Glover added.

Glover's areas of interest include health equity and health disparities; structural and psychosocial determinants of health; intersectionality as a conceptual framework and methodology; and social cognitive processes such as attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions. Her research focuses on understanding and facilitating cognitive and healthy aging across all demographic groups, with a special concentration on African American/Black and Hispanic/Latino communities and others traditionally under-included in aging and dementia research.

Glover belongs to several professional groups, including the Alzheimer's Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment (ISTAART) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention BOLD Public Health Center of Excellence on Dementia Risk Reduction.

The new journal's deputy editor is Jennifer Hagerty Lingler, PhD, MA, CRNP, FAAN, of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Lingler leads the School of Nursing's Hartford Center for Gerontological Nursing Research. She also leads the Outreach, Recruitment, and Education Core at the University of Pittsburgh Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

“The Alzheimer's Association supports knowledge sharing among the global scientific community by publishing Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association, the leading scientific publication in Alzheimer's and dementia research, along with a family of topic-specific publications,” said Maria C. Carrillo, PhD, Alzheimer's Association chief science officer and medical affairs lead. “A&D: BSEA, with the vision and leadership of Dr. Glover, is a welcome and much-needed addition.”

Alzheimer's & DementiaBehavior & Socioeconomics of Aging joins the established members of the Alzheimer's & Dementia family of journals:
  • Flagship journal: Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's & Dementia has a 2023 impact factor of 13.
  • Alzheimer's & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions (A&D: TRCI) has a 2023 impact factor of 4.9.
  • Alzheimer's & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring (A&D: DADM) has a 2023 impact factor of 4.0.

The Alzheimer's & Dementia journals are open access and freely available to readers worldwide, ensuring that cutting-edge research and critical findings are widely accessible. The Alzheimer's & Dementia family of peer-reviewed journals bridge knowledge gaps in dementia research by publishing work across the spectrum of science: from basic science to clinical trials, to social and behavioral investigations. The journals offer a platform for sharing new findings and ideas, translating research into practical applications and interventions, expanding knowledge across disciplines, and identifying promising new research and therapeutic directions.
