The anthropologist Helen Fisher, who died just a few weeks ago, was well known for her many elegant studies on the pharmacology and neuroanatomy of the three primary emotions associated with mating and reproduction: sexual desire or lust, romantic love, and long term attachment or devotion. Lust, she thought, was mediated in the brain by oestrogens and androgens, romantic love by increases in dopaminergic and adrenergic function and reduced serotonergic function, largely in the right ventral tegmental area and the right caudate nucleus, and attachment by oxytocin and vasopressin, largely in the ventral pallidum. Drugs that might be thought to have aphrodisiac properties might be modelled on these findings, but beneficial effects have either not been confirmed or have not been impressive in clinical trials, and adverse effects are always a concern. The death recently of the anthropologist Helen Fisher reminds us, through her many elegant studies on the subject, of the pharmacological systems associated with love and sex. Fisher described three primary emotions associated with mating and reproduction: the sex drive or lust, romantic attraction or love, and attachment or devotion.12 Based largely on the results of published animal experiments, she initially connected each of these with pharmacological systems: sex drive with oestrogens and androgens; attraction with increased brain activity of dopamine and noradrenaline (norepinephrine) and reduced activity of 5-hydroxytyptamine (serotonin); and devotion with the neuropeptides vasopressin and oxytocin.
