To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) in oral tissue damage and periodontal diseases, this study designed and synthesized a novel near-infrared fluorescent probe, BPTQ. The probe BPTQ can react with NO through its amino group to form N-nitroso compounds, which induces a highly selective and sensitive fluorescence "turn-on" effect. The probe exhibited a detection limit of 15 nM and responded rapidly within 30 s. Analysis of saliva samples from 36 healthy individuals and those with oral diseases demonstrated a direct link between NO levels and the occurrence of oral diseases. Cell experiments further confirmed the low toxicity of the probe and its ability to effectively monitor endogenous NO in cells. Therefore, the BPTQ fluorescent probe developed in this study represents a promising new tool for monitoring and assessing the progression of oral diseases.
