Exposure to atrazine, a common herbicide frequently used in dry crops such as corn, can have negative effects on the reproductive and endocrine systems, according to several studies. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring phytoalexin antioxidant, is recognized as an effective treatment for the prevention of aging and reproductive impairments. A study in Scientific Reports explores whether resveratrol can reverse reproductive damage caused by atrazine in male rats. Atrazine exposure decreased male fertility and serum testosterone levels in rats, but cotreatment with resveratrol restored testosterone levels. Additionally, while atrazine upregulated caspase 3 and iNOS levels, cotreatment with resveratrol downregulated these markers compared to the atrazine-only group. Cotreatment also attenuated testicular tissue alterations caused by atrazine. However, resveratrol treatment did not rescue sperm morphology damage. Although resveratrol-treated animals did not completely recover from all of atrazine’s deleterious effects, the study suggests that resveratrol is a potentially beneficial supplement for protecting the reproductive system from toxic effects.
