A comparative study on the oxidation behaviour of NbC-Ni, WC-Co, and high entropy carbide-Ni based cermets

The oxidation behaviour of NbC-13.5(wt%)Ni, NbC-5.7MoC-13.3Ni and WC-12Co was compared to that of equimolar quinary (TiVNbTaW)C-10Ni and non-equimolar senary (TiVNbTaMoW)C-10Ni high entropy carbide (HEC)-Ni cermets. Isothermal oxidation experiments were performed at 700 °C, whereas non-isothermal calorimetric experiments were conducted to determine the onset temperature of oxidation. HEC-based cermets exhibited superior oxidation resistance and a unique oxide layer morphology, which was attributed to the formation of a chemically complex oxide scale mainly consisting of (Ti,V,Nb,Ta,Ni)O and Ni(Mo,W)O. The NbC-based cermets showed the least oxidation resistance and formed a porous oxide layer of NbO and (Nb,Ni)O, whereas WC-Co showed an intermediate oxidation behaviour with respect to the HEC-Ni based cermets. All composites followed a linear oxidation rate law, and the senary HEC cermet demonstrated the slowest oxidation kinetics.
