The increasingly frequent heat waves and urban heat island (UHI) effects pose a serious threat to urban thermal environment and citizens' health. Under this condition, various heat mitigation strategies have been proposed and developed, while little attention was paid to their interactions that impact the combined cooling effects. In this context, using a residential community in Beijing as the case study area, this research aimed to investigate the interaction between increasing tree canopy coverage (TCC) and other four common cooling measures (cool paving, high-albedo façade, green façade and grassland) through simulated experiments. With this aim, the microclimate model, ENVI-met, was employed, 15 scenarios were constructed, and 3 typical parameters were selected to evaluate thermal environment. It has been found that: 1) increasing TCC lowered the cooling effect of cool paving/high-albedo façade, and planting trees on the cool paving ground failed to further reduce local air temperature; 2) trees and green façade promoted each other in reducing air temperature; 3) increasing TCC decreased the grassland's ability in improving thermal comfort, and arranging grassland under trees slightly raised air temperature. The understandings from this study could provide useful insights on urban construction and renovation to urban planners and decision makers.
