New research demonstrates that speech dysfunction detected via smartphone voice calls can be used to identify people with isolated rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD). Using a smartphone app to collect voice recordings, a sample duration of 8 min was sufficient to differentiate between people with iRBD and healthy volunteers; a significant difference between the groups was found in monopitch and imprecise vowel articulation. iRBD is recognized as a prodromal stage of Parkinson disease, so the test could provide an accessible, early disease biomarker.
