5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural synthesis from waste paper, cotton and poly/mono-meric carbohydrates

A simple, sustainable, one-pot, and highly efficient protocol for the synthesis of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) and furfural from waste papers, cotton, poly/mono-meric carbohydrates using a hydrothermal reactor system has been demonstrated. The synergetic role of oxalic acid and LiCl was investigated for the conversion of different types of waste paper such as cardboard, newspaper, tissue paper, white paper, and cotton in a greener solvent media THF-water to 5-HMF and furfural production. Moreover, the influence of reaction time, temperature, oxalic acid and LiCl concentrations, and the impact of different solvents were critically examined to procure 27–79 and 39–62 mol% yields of 5-HMF and furfural respectively. This study also elucidates the relative compositions of various waste paper/cotton, and the quantification of desired products were determined through the ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) analysis technique with 85–95% products purity.
