A group of novel benzofuran and benzothiophene-based small molecules were designed, synthesized and evaluated as amyloid-beta aggregation modulators. The results obtained demonstrate that these class of molecules can be chemically modified to obtain either amyloid-beta aggregation inhibitors or promoters. These studies demonstrate their potential application to develop novel diagnostics and therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease.
