A Multielectron and High-Potential Spirobifluorene-Based Posolyte for Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries

This research addresses a critical challenge in developing multielectron positive electrolyte (posolyte) with high redox potential for aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) as an advanced energy storage technology. The chlorinated spirobifluorene ammonium salts (CSFAs) is synthesized via a green chlorination-protection mechanism during the initial battery cycling, leveraging side reactions to develop new redox species. A full battery using CFSA-Cl achieved over 99.4 % coulombic efficiency and 95 % capacity utilization for 250 stable cycles.
