The catalyst and its surrounding microenvironment jointly determine the performance of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. In a recent issue of Chem Catalysis, Takanabe and co-workers showed that microkinetic studies on factors beyond the catalyst offer valuable guidance for optimizing the performance of copper-based catalysts under industrial conditions.
