Experimental-FEA investigation of the structural performance of steel box connector in precast concrete connection

In this study, the steel box connector is proposed as a solution to improve the response of a precast structure under static and dynamic loads, especially the intermediate moment frame of a beam–column structure. The performance of the steel box connector with steel reinforcement and beam structure was investigated by experiment and finite element analysis. A steel box connector (SBC) designed with special characteristics and different thicknesses of 20–25 mm were considered and evaluated through tensile tests of the SBC-steel rod, SBC-steel reinforcement and flexural tests of beams with SBC and mechanical connector. The specimens with SBC exhibited good response with a high load capacity from 378-488kN and small displacement. The cracking status, failure mode and behavior of the SBC elements, including the box section, steel rod, steel bars, and beam structure, showed the same behavior in experimental and 3D modeling results. In addition, the simulation analysis was in good agreement with the experimental results with a difference under 15%. The investigation, evaluation, and verification of the steel box connector performance helps ensure the optimized application of SBC in precast structures.
