In the 1920s, on the backdrop of explosive industrial growth, the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory (1924–1947) performed extensive physiological and chemical studies in exercising individuals that helped shape our understanding of exercise physiology today [1]. Although its initial construct was designed to study the physiology of fatigue in the workplace [2], the innovative experimental techniques developed by the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory helped improve our understanding of the physiological adaptation during exercise [1, 2].
