Against the background of high global temperatures and droughts, an unprecedented flood occurred in August 2022 across the Tarim River Basin (TRB), an arid region in China. Based on the observed differing gradients of high-density automated meteorological and hydrological data, this study analyzed the hydro-meteorological drivers of the TRB flood process and revealed the driving mechanism of the flood from the large-scale circulation perspective. We showed that the Aksu River floods were dominated by heavy rainfall, those of the Chechen River were primarily influenced by high temperatures, and those of the Yarkand, Hotan, and Kaidu Rivers were influenced by both high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The record-breaking persistently high temperatures over the entire TRB combined with heavy rainfall over the mid-mountainous zone (between 1000–3000 m) were dominant factors in the unprecedented TRB flooding in August 2022. Since August 2022, the westward shift of the record-breaking western North Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) merged with the Iran Subtropical High (ISH), which formed a subtropical high zone and was the driver of unprecedented high temperatures controlling TRB regional conditions. The South Asian high-pressure intensification and westward extension of the WPSH were consistent with the high temperature and flood evolution of the TRB, reflecting the direct influence of the large-scale circulation drive on TRB flood evolution. These findings support flood forecasting and climate-impact studies.
