Preparation of a locust protein and cellulose composite as natural based source material for air filtration membrane fabrication

As a pest, locusts have caused great economic loss and ecological damage. However, locusts are rich in protein, and the functional components of protein have a high utilization value. Herein, a source material of air filtration membrane (WP/BC/ILP) for particulate matter (PM) were prepared by blending isolated locust protein (ILP), bacterial cellulose (BC), and micron-sized wood pulp fiber (WP). This WP/BC/ILP exhibited favorable mechanical properties after optimization experiments, maintaining considerable filtration efficiency even as air flow rates varied. Under different pollutant concentrations, the WP/BC/ILP had high and stable filtration efficiency for PM with different particle sizes. In addition, the WP/BC/ILP was prepared with biodegradable material a simple production method without organic solvents. This study prospectively provides a reasonable method for utilizing locust protein and a strategy for the source materials with high efficiency and environmental protection air filters.
