Comprehensive spectroscopic analysis of the chemical properties of moso bamboo at different ages

One- and four-year-old Moso bamboo materials were selected as the research objects. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to analyze the samples’ chemical properties and compositions of Moso bamboo samples. The relative amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose were higher in one-year-old Moso bamboo than in four-year-old, but the latter Moso bamboo had higher relative lignin levels. The relative amounts of guaiacyl and syringyl propane units (G and S), and the S/G ratio were higher in the lignin of four years old bamboo samples was than one-year-old bamboo, and the S/G ratio was larger in four-year-old bamboo samples. The relative content of hydroxyphenyl propane units (H) was lower in four-year-old Moso bamboo than in one-year-old bamboo. There was a higher proportion of β-O-4 structures in the lignin of four-year-old bamboo. The cellulose crystallinity showed that the four-year-old bamboo sample had higher crystallinity than the one-year-old bamboo sample, and the relative content of Iα was higher in the four-year-old bamboo samples, but the relative content of Iβ was lower in the four years old bamboo samples, indicating a transformation from Iβ to Iα. This examination of the chemical characteristics of Moso bamboo materials at various ages will help build a theoretical foundation for the sane and effective use of Moso bamboo can be developed by examining the chemical characteristics of the material at various ages.
