For over a century, the catalytic conversion of syngas (H₂ and CO) to higher (C2+) alcohols has garnered significant scientific interest. However, industrial deployment has been traditionally hampered by trade-offs between syngas conversion and alcohol selectivity. In this issue of Chem Catalysis, Ge et al. describe ZrO₂-promoted Fe (Fe@ZrO₂) as a high-performance and compositionally simple catalyst. Oxygen-deficient ZrO2-x patches add to the stabilization of Fe3O4-Fe5C2 interfaces, which could integrate C–C chain growth with associative CO insertion for higher-alcohol synthesis.
