Combining relative stress gradient and effective notch stress methods to evaluate the fatigue life of steel welded members after TIG dressing

TIG dressing significantly improves the fatigue strength of welded structures by enlarging the weld toe radius and thereby decreasing stress concentrations and stress gradients at the weld toe location. To accurately evaluate the fatigue life of welded members after TIG dressing, the present work proposes a new strategy by combining the relative stress gradient and effective notch stress method. For this purpose, 151 fatigue data containing various materials and weld types were collected to illustrate the applicability of the proposed strategy. The results show that the fatigue assessment classes adjusted by the relative stress gradient in the effective notched stress method are well suited for assessing the fatigue life of welded members after TIG dressing. Meanwhile, this study also determined the unified S-N curve of the effective notched stress method for assessing the fatigue life of welded members after TIG dressing, i.e., m = 4.4 and FAT326.
