In the globalized society, marine transportation is a key economic sector facing critical issues of air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and rising costs of fossil fuels, calling for a rapid shift to decarbonized vessels. Here, we discuss the advantages, disadvantages and challenges of the implementation of alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol.
