An Extensive Analysis of Current Synthetic Methodologies and Applications of Imidazo/Benzimidazo[1,2-c]Quinazolines

Imidazo/Benzimidazo[1,2-c]quinazoline is a planar trinitrogen heteroarene that contains both imidazole/benzimidazole and quinazoline moiety fused together by a common link. Not surprisingly, imidazo/benzimidazo[1,2-c]quinazoline is an privileged scaffold with diverse applications in biological and medicinal studies, as many molecules containing this framework exhibit a wide range of therapeutic activities, such as DNA intercalator, anticancer, antitumor, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties. In addition to its physiological applications, this moiety has been investigated for electrical conductivity, molecules/ions sensing, coordination complex and coordination polymer (CP) formation, and their diverse applications. As a consequence, enormous efforts have been expended in order to construct such a skeleton. This review compiles recent research methodologies and various applications of the imidazo/benzimidazo[1,2-c]quinazoline moiety reported in peer-reviewed journals.
