Effect of plate teeth spacing on particle capture in high intensity magnetic separation adopting grooved plates with elliptic teeth

For further improving recovery of ultrafine paramagnetic minerals, optimization of horizontal high intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is of great significance. Grooved plates are key component of the HIMS system. Previous study showed that grooved plate with elliptic teeth had better magnetic characteristics and particle capture performance than conventional plate with right-angle teeth, but those for the case of only one piece of plate were studied and compared. In actual HIMS of multiple plates, magnetic characteristics of grooved plates will be affected by adjacent plates and plate spacing is definitely an important parameter influencing separation performance. In this study, particle capture and separation performance of multiple grooved plates with elliptic teeth was investigated theoretically and experimentally. High magnetic field area of opposing plates overlapped with each other under small teeth tip spacing and gradually decoupled with increasing spacing. Grooved plates with elliptic teeth of aspect ratio 2 could have higher particle capture cross section area and space utilization rate than conventional ones with right-angle teeth. As teeth tip spacing increased, particle capture cross section area increased firstly and then kept constant or slightly decreased, with space utilization rate decreasing throughout. Experimental results were in accordance with theoretical analyses except for those under small teeth tip spacing, which was caused by saturated particle buildup and exacerbation of mechanical entrainment. There existed the optimal teeth tip spacing for the highest separation efficiency. Superior separation performance could be obtained by elliptic teeth plates with aspect ratio 2 under teeth tip spacing 2 mm, indicating good application potential of elliptic teeth plate in processing weakly magnetic minerals.
