Bioactive plant product plumieride and plumericin and their importance in medicine

The iridoid class of phytochemicals includes important phytochemicals found in many traditional medicinal plants. Plumieride and plumericin have been isolated from , , , and other medicinal plants. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the known medicinal properties, pharmacological activities and analytical aspects of plumieride and plumericin in medicine. All scientific data and information on plumieride and plumericin were collected from PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar and Google. Furthermore, molecular mechanistic studies with important analytical aspects of plumieride and plumericin in medicine have also been studied. Scientific data have indicated the biological potential of plumericin against ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, vascular disease, inflammatory conditions and cancer. This review also describes the anti-mycobacterial, antiparasitic, antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic potential of plumericin in medicine. Plumieride have neuropharmacological, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunostimulatory, anticancer, anti-malarial, anti-dermatophytic, antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, cytotoxic potential and insecticidal properties. Furthermore, plumieride is also effective on spermatogenesis and other enzymes. Moreover, the analytical aspects of plumieride and plumericin have also been described in the present review in order to know their separation, isolation and identification. Further scientific studies on the pharmacokinetics and molecular mechanism of plumieride and plumericin will contribute to understand their pharmacological effects. Scientific data from published studies demonstrate the therapeutic effect of plumieride and plumericin in medicine. However, scientific research is needed to know the long-term toxicity and clinical efficacy of plumieride and plumericin.
