Effect of supervisor incivility: Role of internal whistleblowing as a coping mechanism by hotel employees

Leveraging the Affective Events theory, the study attempts to investigate the relationship between supervisor incivility and internal whistleblowing among hotel employees. It further intends to comprehend the role of the dark triad supervisors in mediating the relationship between supervisor incivility and internal whistleblowing. The conceptual framework was tested using data collected from 216 employees from hotels in India. Partial least square (PLS-SEM) was utilized for data analysis. The findings of the study suggested that supervisor incivility and internal whistleblowing have a positive and significant relationship. Besides, the dark triad traits of Machiavellianism, Psychopathy, and Narcissism are found to mediate the effect of supervisor incivility on internal whistleblowing. Our study extends the field of research on workplace incivility by providing empirical evidence on the link of supervisor incivility with internal whistleblowing, as well as that dark triad traits are personalities displayed by the perpetrators against whom internal whistleblowing is displayed by incivility victims.
