Conductive Thin-Film Structure for EMP Protection of Operational Infrastructure Facilities: Measurement and Verification up to 18 GHz

Given the increasing need for an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) protection of operational infrastructure facilities, we designed, constructed, and verified a conductive thin-film structure with high shielding effectiveness (SE) from 10 kHz to 18 GHz. The SE of the conductive thin-films was measured preliminarily using ASTM D-4935 and the aperture method. In particular, the aperture size for the low-frequency magnetic band was increased to extend the dynamic range (DR) of measurement. We constructed a test shelter and an EMP protection facility for an operational office using the conductive thin-film. The measurement results for the material itself, test shelter, and the EMP protection facility were consistent from 10 kHz to 18 GHz, validating the measurement and construction methods proposed in this article. Moreover, the SE of the constructed EMP protection facility met the MIL-STD-188-125-1 requirements (over 80 dB up to 18 GHz). This study demonstrated that conductive thin-film structures can provide an alternative shielding solution for major infrastructure facilities.
