A Treg cell duo for VAT control

Changes in populations of regulatory T (Treg) cells in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) have been linked to metabolic disorders; Valle Torres, Man et al. now characterize Treg cell heterogeneity in VAT.

In addition to the previously reported population of VAT Treg cells that express PPARγ and ST2 (also known as IL-33R or IL-1RL1), the authors describe a second VAT Treg cell subset with high expression of CXCR3 and other T helper 1 (TH1) cell-associated genes. The ST2+ Treg cell subset was predominant in the VAT of male mice and expanded proportionally to body mass or age, whereas the CXCR3+ Treg cell subset was more prominent in the VAT of female mice, and inversely correlated with body mass.
