A conjugated phenylene nanocage featuring a highly deformable cavity has been constructed from a pliable calix[6]arene moiety and a strained phenylene moiety. The cage contains a guest-adaptive cavity, the volume of which can expand by as much as 85 % upon complexation with fullerene guests of different sizes.
