An acetate-anion-directed approach is developed to create asymmetric Zn−N3O moiety on polymeric carbon nitride (CN/Zn−OAc) using zinc acetate. The asymmetric coordination modulates the electronic structure of Zn centers, thus facilitating O2 adsorption and the subsequent generation of the key intermediate *OOH. As a result, CN/Zn−OAc exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2O2 production activity under visible light irradiation.
