Biological and bioinspired Bouligand structural materials: Recent advances and perspectives

Fiber-based biological Bouligand structure lays mechanical foundations for many organisms. Decoding and transcribing biological Bouligand structure into synthetics is promising for boosting the development of fiber-based structural materials. In this review, the universality and characterization techniques of biological Bouligand structure are introduced. Several representative fabrication strategies of bioinspired Bouligand structural materials are presented and compared. Envisioning future development of bioinspired Bouligand structural materials, this review can spur continuous efforts and innovations concerning bioinspired fiber-based structural materials.
