A set of isostructural Cu6 clusters (Cu6−NH, Cu6−N and Cu6−py) enabled the structure−activity relationship in photocatalytic CO2 reduction to be studied at the atomic level. The protonated pyrimidine N in Cu6−NH could act as a proton relay station to provide a local proton, enabling the formation of the key *COOH intermediate during CO generation, which significantly improved the photocatalytic performance.
