Liquid metals have garnered increasing attention as an emerging class of functional materials in recent years. In this work, an azo polymer coat with photo-responsive properties is successfully applied onto the surface of liquid metal through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The photo-responsiveness of the resulting liquid metal/azo polymer hybrid material is thoroughly investigated. Liquid metal nanodroplets grafted with azo polymers exhibit exceptional ultraviolet and near infrared photo-responsiveness due to photothermal effect of liquid metal and isomerization of azo polymer.
