Pyrogallol (PG) plays a crucial role in synthesizing benzotropolone (BTP). This is because it can not only couple with catechol (CC) to form BTP, two PG molecules can also produce purpurogallin (PPG) that has the same skeleton as BTP. Furthermore, PGQT-III, an oxidation product of PG, might serve as the direct substrates for the synthesis of BTP, which was supported by computational study and retrosynthetic analysis of bicyclo[3.2.1]octane-type intermediate (BOI).
