The electrocatalytic C−N coupling of carbon dioxide and nitrogen is a sustainable and promising alternative for urea synthesis. Here we demonstrate that the one-step C−N coupling via direct insertion of CO into N2 molecules is the intrinsic cause for the ∼100 % N-selectivity to urea.
