Developing new upcycling strategies to address the threats from waste plastics can significantly improve global sustainability. An atom economic reaction was demonstrated to convert polyesters into diols with great selectivity over a Zn-modified Cu catalyst. The reaction could be operated in solvent-free mode with all atoms in the reactants fixed into the final product, eliminating the need for a separation process.
