Direct synthesis of CH3COOH from CH4 and CO2 is made possible. The process first activates CO2 by electrochemistry, producing CO and O2. It is followed by oxidative CH4 carbonylation catalyzed by Rh single atom catalysts. The net result is CH4 carboxylation with 100 % atom economy.
