A mild and effective method for α-monobromination of various ketones using a combination of potassium bromide and ferric nitrate nonahydrate was developed. The expected products were afforded in good to excellent yields. Major advantages of this procedure include the use of cheap and readily available reagents, exclusion of the need of acids or catalyst, and broad functional group compatibility.
