To leverage the oxygen produced from the avoidable side reaction of oxygen evolution in Ni-Zn battery, an air-breathing cathode is constructed by coupling oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst with the Ni(OH)2 cathode. Benefiting from the stabilizing effects on the electrolyte and electrodes, this novel battery (Ni-ZnAB) exhibits an ultralong lifespan and ultrahigh energy efficiency (85 %), superior to Ni-Zn battery and Zn-air battery (ZAB).
