The electrocatalytic C−N coupling from carbon dioxide and nitrate is a sustainable and promising alternative for urea synthesis. Here we demonstrate that the localized negatively charged surface with C-affinity is superior to the positively charged one with O-affinity, providing guidance for screening and design of electrocatalysts for urea synthesis.
