Trace Element Composition of Beryl From the Sherlovaya Gora Deposit, Southeastern Transbaikal Region, Russia

Abstract

The trace element distribution (including water and halogens) has been studied for the first time using SIMS techniques, in two different yellow beryl (heliodor) crystals from greisens of the Sherlovaya Gora deposit. The crystals showed different growth zoning. The zoning of bright heliodor (12 point analyses) is reflected in increasing contents of Fe, Ti, Sc, Na, K, Cs, Li, water, and chlorine from core to rim. This zoning is caused by substitution of Fe3+ and Sc3+ for Al3+ or by substitution of Fe2+ for Al3+ with the charge compensation provided by univalent LILE (Na, Cs, Li, K, Rb), which are incorporated into the structure channels. Together with LILE, water and chlorine are incorporated into channels. The majority of the transparent light heliodor crystal (nine point analyses) is compositionally homogeneous, and the trace element concentration changes only in the crystal rim. Sodium, Li, and Cl contents decreasing toward the crystal margin negatively correlate with the Fe, Ti, Sc, K, Ca, and Cs concentrations. Similar zoning may have been caused by simultaneous precipitation of heliodor and minerals concentrating Na, Li, and Cl, such as albite and lithium mica.
