Activatable fluorescent probes consisting of a donor-π-acceptor-based fluorophore conjugated with the uPAR-binding AE105 peptide effectively monitor uPAR levels in a “turn-on” mode. The application of the fluorescent “turn-on” probes is demonstrated in the imaging of uPAR overexpressed on the membrane of cancer cells and in a cell-based uPAR inhibitor assay.
