Two novel sequential approaches for elaborate hydro pyranone synthesis were developed that relied either on an aldol-lactonization sequence of an unprotected aldehyde with a chiral enolate or a challenging dienolate ketone addition with subsequent cyclization. These procedures enable concise and short preparations of the authentic subunit of the polyketide macrolide tuscolid.
