An effective approach is reported for selectivity control of FeCl3-catalyzed oxygenation. For aerobic oxidation of cycloketones in DMSO, it is disclosed that decreasing FeCl3 loading successfully changes the reaction pathway from C−C cleavage to hydroxylation, and the reductant role of DMSO is emphasized.
