Preparation and application of recyclable multifunctional self-healing thioctic acid-based materials

Thioctic acid (TA) is found in nature, and its simple structure makes it an inexpensive raw ingredient for high-performance polymers. In recent years, the research of TA-based materials has made remarkable progress, especially in self-healing materials. Using the reversibility of disulfide bonds, the polymer obtained can be easily and effectively recovered by an alkaline aqueous solution, implying that TA-based polymers could be developed into low-cost, high-performance, multi-functional sustainable materials in the future. The synthesis and use of TA-based materials, together with the advancement of research both domestically and internationally, were compiled in this work. It was indicated that TA-based materials combined with nanomaterials and computer simulation would represent a fresh approach to research in the future.
