This work discovered that fluorescence protein chromophore analogs can undergo triplet excitation, enabling photo-crosslinking and photo-sensitizing chemistries. Exploration of these synthetic fluorescent protein chromophores resulted in photo-crosslinkers for biomolecules, photo-catalysts for organic reactions, and photosensitizers for chromophore-assisted light inactivation and photodynamic therapies.
