Characterization and application of a bismuth titanate Bi2Ti2O7 synthetized through a solvothermal route for glycerol photooxidation and photoreforming

A bismuth titanate with a pyrochlore structure Bi2Ti2O7 was synthesized through a solvothermal route and tested in photooxidation and photoreforming of glycerol under UV and visible light. The titanate was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, transmission electron microscopy and UV/Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Dihydroxyacetone appears as the main product of the photooxidation tests with a 28.6 % of the initial glycerol in solution converted into this product under UV light. Photoreforming test for hydrogen production, also under UV light, was performed with platinized titanate with a rate of 0.69 μmolH2min−1.
