Structural evolution of the Prussian blue analogue precatalysts has been attained by replacing a −CN group with strong π-acidic −NO. This in turn tunes the electronic and atomic structures and electrochemical properties of the active catalyst and a significant improvement in the alkaline water oxidation activity has been observed.
