The properties of a sp2-carbon-linked covalent organic framework (COF) were dramatically improved by a gradient heating synthetic strategy. The new framework material displayed a superior hydrogen evolution activity of over 100 000 μmol g−1 h−1 for water splitting under visible-light illumination.
