A simple and widely applicable strategy for the construction of pH-responsive peptide self-assembly containing unnatural ionic amino acids is reported. These residues are stabilized in the internal hydrophobic compartment with a drastically reduced pKa in the weakly acidic range, which has significant implications toward practical applications ranging from targeted therapeutic delivery to proton transport.
